AI and Design

Artificial Intelligence and Design: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

With its good, bad and ugly sides, AI is ubiquitous and here to stay. This may be truer for designers than anyone else. The intersection of AI and design is rapidly evolving: new, large-scale 3D houses are being printed; the latest text-to-image software – like Midjourney, DALL-E and Stable Diffusion – is changing the way architects design; AI-empowered technology is reforming the face of fashion with generative stylists and AI ‘design assistants’; and the controversial chatbot ChatGPT recently entered our lives. For decades AI has directly affected the design industry, with many arguing for the positives. Still, with rising fears around security and data breaches, as well as designer’s disputes about AI and authorship, creativity and machines replacing the workforce means that we cannot discount the growing concerns.

The theme for our third issue of Al Journal is ‘Design and AI’, a look at the impact that AI has had on the design industry and how it is shaping its future, from groundbreaking innovations with positive outcomes to ethical and social concerns.
